Challenge
Whether I develop a new website or not, Takeya Sushi Japanese Restaurant has already been successful and stable. They have loyal customers and receive the order by phone. So, what can I do for Takeya Sushi? I don’t have a reason to work if I cannot give values.
Situation
– The website was developed by the coder. The manager cannot update the website by own.
– The website does not attract new customers. The photo is too small and no content strategy applied.
Target
– Loyal customer
– A potential local new customer
Problem
– Order by call consumes time
– A customer has to wait for payment at peak hour
– Misalignment of website and social media platform
Goal
– Integrating the online order system ✔️
– Improving the recurring profit ratio(Online order > Food delivery)
– Reduce the waiting time for pick up, provide a good CX ✔️
Online Order System
POS(Point Of Sale) system
I searched for an online ordering system. I could find so many services, but I could not choose one even I think it looks good. Because the online ordering system has to integrate into a current POS system. This means once a staff accepts an order, it is recorded into POS without manual input. At the same time, a printer has to printout a receipt in the kitchen.
Takeya Sushi has already operated a POS system since 2001. I cannot recommend the latest POS system optimistically. The current POS is a little complicated to use it. There are 3 POS at the restaurant, but the staff gets used to it.
If I propose a new POS, the workflow may be improved. Not only an order calculation, but also loyal customer marketing(coupon or campaign), stock management, shift management, paycheck as well. On the other hand, the cost will be increased. I have to think about ROI.
Considerations:
– The online ordering system has to integrate to the current pos system
– Don’t require new pos system or pos machine
– Functionality for a custom order
– Mobile friendly, user-friendly, menu with image
– Printing at the kitchen, once an order approved
– Subscription or be charged by sales
– Reliable technical support etc…
Food delivery APP
©CBC Vancouver: Testing Uber Eats, Foodora and SkipTheDishes (Marketplace)
– APP takes the fee between around 20-35%.
– Restaurant charge more to a customer on the app. It’s not a good customer’s impression.
– Some customers don’t care about it. It’s true, but the restaurant/APP requires transparency.
– A food delivery company should make money. Sure.
– Restaurant profit. I don’t think it’s no profit. APP charges a fee after a sale happens, but it will be less margin. If so, the restaurant has to decrease costs.
– Should not use APP?
– Food quality may drop if you choose delivery.
– The work environment for delivery workers. Insurance and healthcare costs. Some people may prefer part-time. I doubt the possibility of full-time as delivery workers.
– If a company can fix these issues within the current markup, it’s okay. Otherwise, they may increase the commission. Someone has to pay for delivery workers, company, restaurant or consumer.
©CBC Vancouver: Restaurants say delivery apps taking too much commission during a pandemic
Nowadays, food delivery is popular. We can see many delivery workers in the city. As a user, we don’t have to go to a restaurant under the COVID. We can have a restaurant’s meal at home.
Not only the younger generation(digital generation), but it’s also good for older people who hard to walk/drive for a long-distance. How about during the winter? Food delivery may helpful in the long rainy winter. You need to pay extra, but it’s kind of offset if you think it’s the same as the server’s tip.

As a restaurant owner, they have to pay high commissions. It squeezes restaurant profits. I cannot say how much is proper. No one complains about low fees. Restaurants may need to effort to decrease costs with keeping quality. The Amount of material/labor reduces costs, but after COVID, most of the restaurants decreased the customer. Therefore, it sounds tough though.
I heard some users want to save money even they want to enjoy a restaurant meal. They don’t mind to pick the meal up by themself. If so, the restaurant should provide a choice, own online ordering system. Even the restaurant offers 10% off, it’s a better profit compared to food delivery.
Process
I researched the recent restaurant website as well as an online ordering system. It was not rare about their own ordering system. I could find it even though many restaurants were not open in April. I also found many restaurants offer gift cards. Good to know.
I made a move board and aligned the direction with the client before development.
Website
The concept of the website is creating the platform. I integrated a website, online presence(Yelp/Tripadvisor) included social media and online ordering systems.
I also respected Takeya Sushi’s preference, showing all the menu photos. I agree with this direction. I see many restaurants don’t use photos on the menu and it’s very inconvenient as a customer. I understand that it costs for the restaurant. I don’t want to see wasting food for photos. AR maybe solve this issue in the future.

Ideally, I don’t want to use a photographer. Instead of that, APP collects shared photos on the internet and displays it. It’s more eco.
At this moment, when customer orders by the mobile, they cannot see the large image(or no image). The website should support the customer in this situation. Using a lot of photos make the website slow. It’s a disadvantage.
Online Ordering
I conducted a search for an online ordering system, which is highly relevant to restaurant operations. It’s important to note that each restaurant utilizes a different Point of Sale (POS) system. While some of the newer POS services may offer a user-friendly interface for online orders, it’s essential to recognize that changing the POS system can have a significant impact on the restaurant. Mere improvement is insufficient; changing the POS must address critical issues faced by restaurants and provide substantial additional value.
When the POS receives an order, it needs to communicate with the kitchen printer to ensure smooth kitchen operations. Additionally, the POS system manages not only orders but also inventory, employee shifts, and accounts. Furthermore, the POS system deducts a service fee, which can be either a fixed monthly fee or a percentage of each order.
After conducting comprehensive research, the client has chosen to continue using their current POS system in conjunction with the online ordering system.
Result
I could integrate the website and online ordering system. Once the client received and accepted the order, it records on the POS and prints out in the kitchen. It sounds complicated, but I didn’t have to touch the system. I did research and provide a solution.
– Reduce phone call time
– Reduce the stress of lineup for a customer
– Improve the efficiency of social media marketing
– Increase in profit
If the customer uses an online ordering system rather than a call, the lineup will go away. The staff does not need to input each order, like a food delivery system. I wanted to provide a solution for it if possible, but it depends on the POS system after all.
