Story: Review and feedback

On the weekend, I was cleaning up the inbox. Then, the word clicked in my mind, “feedback”.

Upwork asks for a review after the contract is closed. The score helps to engage with the next client, at least over 95%. I am using both client and freelancer accounts. So I understand how a client evaluates and chooses a freelancer,

Google review has controversial(fake or malicious action from a competitor), but it also gives an audience some impression, credential? Review is, after all, not for me, for potential clients. In the review, the customer normally thanks rather than criticizes. It’s an ordinary situation if you don’t have any conflict with a client.

I, as a freelance web/graphic designer, have to constantly improve my performance. I can learn from respectable people in the world, but I don’t have a physical mentor. So, no one feedback or guidance. Therefore, I came up with an idea to ask for feedback(not a review) after the project.

The feedback form should keep short, easy and simple. I searched what should I ask a customer.

33 items are too much for individuals.
– Identifies strengths and weaknesses
– Sets goals and offers feedback for future performance
– Reviews annually, quarterly, monthly or even weekly

Weekly is ideal, but it means that an organization needs a supervisor/manager to execute it.

Reasons for the performance reviews:
– Give feedback, make organization expectations clear
– Identify strengths and weaknesses
– Help growth
– Allocate promotions or pay raises appropriately
– Explain individual and organizational goals
– Use it as a goal-setting opportunity

Conclusion: Meaning of employee

I have a couple of experience working at advertising agencies. I think a part-time job experience is also able to count. I faced many different company cultures. Overall, I want to work with good people, positive environment. There are 2 types of job, for growth opportunity less money or for money just easy job. Some small companies do not have both. That’s tough to stay there.

I always welcome to work at the advertising agency as a sub-contractor. I am thinking that COVID gives freelancers a lot of chances to work remotely. I would like to collaborate with NYC or L.A. companies. Still in the brain, but I am going to try in August.
