Facebook is the biggest social media network in the world. I could say Facebook is one of the symbols of game-changer in the 4th industrial revolution as well as Google, Amazon and Apple. I personally don’t use Facebook recently. When I start to use Facebook, I was shocked by timeless communication and information transparency. I was an active Facebook user in 3 months. Since then, I have stepped back from Facebook.
I understand why so many people use Facebook every day. I said I am not active on Facebook, but I am still using Facebook for business. I have to know Facebook more than a client.
Therefore, I research what Facebook is, what service we can use as a freelance.
Facebook merger
Facebook is a social networking company that has acquired 79 other companies, including WhatsApp. The WhatsApp acquisition closed at a steep $16 billion; more than $40 per user of the platform. – Wikipedia
WhatsApp, Instagram and Oculus VR are group companies of Facebook. I mention the new services of Facebook at the very end. I think Portal and Hilizon became reality through M&A.

Cambridge Analytica scandal taught us the importance of protecting personal information. Facebook has also required for a clear privacy policy.
If someone knows how to find certain people, preferences, and behavior, they can utilize these information for their business. We are aware of it at that time. I am not sure how many people change their sharing behavior. People still enjoy sharing personal life with friends. Facebook is addictive. I am still not clear about the border of privacy. I personally don’t want to share what I liked, what I follow, but Facebook often shows my friend’s actions on my timeline.

Explore Facebook
Regardless of my curiosity, people use facebook. I would like to know the reason why people use Facebook every single day. I have to access Facebook when I use the Facebook business page. I don’t check what my friend is doing, only very top post.
There are many side menus. I’ve never checked these menues before, but I found some useful menus for people’s life. I learned what we can do on Facebook in 2019.
Facebook Watch
A timeline shows only videos which is not relate to your friend. It is not category or channel, like YouTube.
I checked a few videos by the iPhone. I realized that Facebook is quite a mobile-first design. When I checked the Watch page, the timeline shows only 1 video. User can focus 1 video easily, but I could not find the reason why I have to see it, surprising video often.
I am watching YouTube every day and YouTube is learning my preference. I have an unexpectable experience on YouTube. Therefore, I don’t think I will visit Facebook to watch a video in the future.
Facebook Marketplace
People buy and sell on the market place, like a Craigslist. I have to learn and adjust when I start to use a new platform. I don’t want to share these tiny life events each time. I don’t want to show what I bought, what I sold. I am not sure it’s shared and how to protect it. I understand some benefit of Facebook Marketplace, but, it is not attractive for me right now.
problem of Craigslist:
– Unsafe sometimes.
– Fake product.
– Uncertain seller.
Craigslist: Provides local classifieds and forums for jobs, housing, for sale, services, local community, and events.
Facebook Group
I can find a group that is the same industry or similar curiosity. It looks similar to Meetup. This is the power of Facebook, create a community, but I don’t know how many times people gather through Facebook event, how many times I will get group information per week. I like design related stuff, but I prefer separate business and private.
When I move to new city, when I look for a creator for collaboration, Facebook Group may useful. I don’t want to share which group I joined. What conversation I did. Can I keep it private?

Facebook Fundraisers
Facebook Mission: Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.
This mission drives 40,000 smart people. Create a community, help each other, empower people, expand empathy, there are a lot of beautiful stories on Facebook as same as social controversy. I am familiar with gofundme. CBC mentions gofundme often when people need funding. I’ve never heard Facebook Fundraisers, but we don’t mind how many channels we have. This is creative thinking. Good job.
Facebook Jobs
I searched for some related jobs, but I could not find many posts in December 2019. I doubt why the company looks for a candidate on Facebook. I thought Facebook jobs may less competition compared to Linkedin, Glassdoor or Indeed, but I don’t know why the company has to use Facebook.

Facebook Recommendations
The word of mouth is a strong influence on our choice. If it’s from friends, it will a huge influence. I don’t want to ask something before I put on effort for researching myself, but this is an interesting usage of Facebook.
Quora: A platform to ask questions and connect with people who contribute unique insights and quality answers.
Reddit: A network of communities based on people’s interests.
Facebook Games
I don’t play Xbox or Playstation in over 2 decades. I don’t want to waste time with gaming. It makes me feel almost guilty.
I found tiny gamings, othello, tetris, uno or sudoku, are good for the public commuter. Good for kids to develop solving skills and brain training for older people.
Facebook Messenger Kids
When kids build a personality, digital tools, social media naturally exist. I may lucky to see this world transition livery. Social media did not exist when I was kids.
I don’t want kids to think to usually have a Facebook account. They are digitally native and I hope they use social media smartly.
Facebook Gaming Video
I watched the gaming video a few minutes, I could not enjoy anything. The display shows live tab. It means someone may play a game at the same time somewhere in the world, but so what? I surprised to connect to people through playing a game online. It makes me feel almost magic.
I won’t play myself, but I will check the technology of the gaming industry sometimes.

Very meaningful and valuable function. I am just wondering about the priority of the crisis response. How many people know about this tab? Will it work as a useful board under the disaster. I personally prefer to focus on specific services each platform. If we need quick interactions, Twitter may 1st priolity than Facebook

Facebook Portal
In 2019, Mark Zuckerberg announced 2 upcoming services, Portal and Horizon. These are beyond the border of social media, a fusion between virtual and reality. About Portal, there is contravariant for the camera. It captures user for 24 hours. How does user keep privacy at home? If friend does not use it, how do we use it?
Anyway, the door of next-generation opens. I look forward to seeing the social media revolution even I am not active user.

Facebook Horizon – Oculus
It was a very strategic M&A with Oculus VR. I am sure Facebook knew what they want to build in the future. Beyond the consumer’s expectation. That’s great.

Conclusion: It’s okay
In December 2019, I still don’t enjoy Facebook in my life. I don’t need to know much information from friends daily. I don’t have many stories which I want to tell. I prefer to catch up when I meet a friend.
I may change my behavior in the future, but I want to focus on my life rather than connect to others right now.
