Story: Demand in the market
When I build a WordPress website for a client, I use a specific WordPress theme. The theme provider updates template sometimes. Recently, the templates which were updated are all Woocommerce site, 5 Woocommerces for 5 templates in a row. I am sure that it has a demand under the COVID-19.
When I look for the project on UpWork, I often see the project which relates to building an eCommerce website. I can say 30-40% client is asking to use the Shopify platform. I developed once in the past. It’s free in a certain timeline(normally it’s 2 weeks) for one account/email. It was not difficult, but it looked a template obviously. It was public, but I didn’t do marketing. Therefore, I had no sales.
It’s a long time ago. I don’t know how much quality/quantity and customization UpWork clients require us in the project. I don’t know I will apply these projects near future or not. I just want to learn Shopify in 2020.
Problem: Demand for eCommerce increase, need a skillset
Goal: Learn Shopify, develop the Shopify eCommerce website instead of a client
Shopify
– Free for 90 days (normally 14 days/2 weeks). Extended only now, because of coronavirus.
– US$29/mo for the basic plan. You have to sell more than US$29(net, not gross). Otherwise, your business is in deficit.
– Price range, US$29, $79 and $299/mo. It costs you forever.
– The Shopify site insists it’s easy. We may be able to develop a Shopify website easily, but sales are never easy.
– You don’t know until try.

Many designers/developers may be able to build a Shopify page for client, but designer should sell a product themselves first. A designer should put on themselves into the client’s shoes.
CFO talks about components of growth and transition of operation costs. It’s the most interesting part of this video.
In 2020, coronavirus pandemic happened. We understand it’s an unusual situation, but it shows how brick and motor is tough. Once cashflow stopped, it’s huge liabilities each month. You should invest time and money a few K to Shopify if you came up with products and ideas.

Don’t believe the story which sale over $100 on the very first day. These people are just affiliates of Shopify. or They already built an audience on social media, newsletter lists.
This guy mentions earning a few thousand $ a few days. There is marketing costs behind sales. He knows how to marketing. Even you sell revolutionize products it won’t happen. Because your Shopify site does not reach to the target audiences.
You cannot compete with top players who you can see on YouTube. You have to understand that it really takes time. You have to ready to lose money for learning how to sell the product. This experience won’t mean you waste money at all.

Business of Design
If a designer builds an eCommerce website and tries to sell a product, it’s a good experience at all. The designer has to sales, marketing, followup, accounting, etc. I think all designers should know about the process of sales before we create an eCommerce website. You can understand what the client’s problem is. You can provide how to solve it if you have experience.
Therefore, I build a Shopify page. I will report how it worked in the future.
