Story: Longtail keyword for SEO
You may realize something when you apply the study of the last blog, Digital Marketing 101 For Graphic Designer Vol.2. I installed Yoast plugin. I tried to set up Yoast follow the instruction. Then, I stacked. Because I needed a keyword. Let me clear, I have to find a longtail keyword. I searched ‘graphic design vancouver canada’, ‘web design vancouver bc’ or ‘freelance graphic designer vancouver bc hire’ etc. I browsed keyword at the other freelance, agency and company.
My targets are a business consultant, business developer, advertising agency, or small business owner. That’s why I chose the word, ‘freelance’. According to Google and Keyword Everywhere, ‘graphic design’ and ‘web design’ are not so many differences of a result at local. I added the place, Vancouver, BC, Canada. It localizes the service. I don’t have to compete with creators who work in the United States.
How to do keyword research for a local business

1. Start building your keyword list
e.g. business, service, location, etc.(whatever you come up with)
2. Spy on your competitor. Google search and check the results
Google search for primary keywords → find competitors on Google 1st page(Google Ads as well) → Check meta title and meta description
3. Use Google keyword planner. Put on competitor’s URL on the box of your landing page → Keyword ideas
or SEMrush
4. Expand your list with related keywords
Check the very bottom of Google search 1st page, searches related to xxx, xxx, xxx.

6. Make final lists > Google keyword planner > Get search volume data and trend
Without understanding what people are searching for, you will go nowhere. Very true.

I tried to Ubersuggest for a keyword, web designer freelance vancouver. Then, the site asked me the signup immediately. I personally don’t like it. I use Google Keyword Planner.

Conclusion: Keywords in my case
Through the process, I actually applied keyword research myself. I was thinking UX process, about purpose & goal, brand attribute and persona(target audience), user flow. You may already provide UX to a client as one of the design services. However, I, freelance graphic/web designer at the early stage (within 3 years since you’ve started) have to test value of my service myself first. Get the point, make a result. Then, let’s help/save others.
