Impact of COVID-19 for Freelance

As the impacts of Coronavirus pandemic(COVID-19), VPL(Vancouver Public Library) has closed. Cafes are almost unavailable for work. I worked at home today, but it was unproductivity. Therefore, I checked my past blog about the co-working space and updated the price on it. This is cynical. I have to consider using co-working space when the government announces to stay home.

On March 18th, I contacted WeWork and L’Atelier. I visited at WeWork after booking. I talked with a receptionist. I passed the contact information. However, she didn’t get back to me. WeWork does not know these small actions build a company’s brand even they build a fancy space.

In the afternoon, I visited L’Atelier. I didn’t want to spend time considering the place. I wanted to get back to work asap. I decided to work at L’Atelier for a month. I have no idea when the Coronavirus pandemic subsided.

Story: Look for workplace

Once you choose to work as a freelancer, you have to cover all expense by your work, such as rent (working space), software, insurance, internet, and grocery. You will appreciate a previous company to generous support which you didn’t know. You also realize how tough to running a business, how to generate new job consistently, how to estimate, how to decide to hire people,  etc.

I wanted to save a money as much as possible. Hence, I used a cafe and a public library. I could save a rent and internet. I used Meetup APP for maintaining a motive and passion. Since 2016, so many co-working spaces have opened in Vancouver, BC. I’ve never considered about these services before. However, I got used to working at a cafe and library. I needed to change my daily routines. Here is the list which I used co-working space 1+ times. I felt these co-working spaces are a nice work environment, convenient place,  and close to good local neighbor.

+Idea: FreeSpace

This is the last idea if you cannot afford co-working spaces above. It calls FreeSpace. FreeSpace transformed restaurants to co-working spaces. $49.99 per month. Message from the website below.

Building a working community where you live.

Vancouver is often recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, and we feel fortunate to call it our home. Yet for all the recognition this city receives for its diversity and natural beauty it is rare that Vancouver is mentioned without one bringing up the cost of living, and the scarcity of affordable space.

Each day thousands of people seek out a comfortable spot where they can sit, plug in and get to work without feeling obligated to purchase something, or have to worry about whether or not they will get a spot to sit (or if the Wi-Fi they are using is secured). Yet some of the most beautiful spaces, in prime locations within the city, sit underutilized for significant portions of the day. And if that is the case within our own city. It must be the same elsewhere.

That got us thinking.

What if how we perceived the concept of space and how it is utilized could change? What if we could flip the switch on the traditional narrative, and create an environment of abundance rather than scarcity?

This is how FreeSpace was born.

We hope to evolve the way that we think about, and use space efficiently and affordably and welcome you to join the journey.

FreeSpace: Transformed restaurants to co-working spaces.

Recap: What did I learn?

1. Good work environment boosts your work efficiency and productivity.
2. I need a stable cash flow. Otherwise, extra expense hurts your finance.
3. Consider the hourly value of your work.
