Story: What is Black Friday?
Black Friday originated from a convergence of Thanksgiving traditions and savvy retailers’ marketing tactics. The day after Thanksgiving in the United States naturally saw a surge in shoppers due to the holiday’s festivities and people being together. Retailers recognized this opportunity and began offering special promotions and discounts to attract shoppers, effectively jumpstarting the Christmas shopping season. Over time, Black Friday transformed into a significant shopping event, with stores opening earlier and more extensive sales, leading to a cultural phenomenon where eager shoppers often line up or camp out for the best deals. It has become an annual tradition and one of the biggest shopping days in the U.S., marking the official start of the holiday shopping frenzy.
In 2023, Black Friday is set for November 24. I have been in Canada for 10 years, and I know that Black Friday starts before the official date. Therefore, I am preparing shopping lists as a freelance web/graphic designer.
Digital products
Black Friday applies across the industry. Please don’t miss the digital products that you need for design work. You may be able to reduce the expenses in 2024.
WordPress theme
The WordPress theme may not be an exciting aspect of shopping, but if you choose to develop your website using a paid WP theme, Black Friday presents a great opportunity to lower your costs. While the theme’s support may have expired in 6 months, there is no expiration date for the license.
Elementor (WordPress theme)
Elementor Ltd. is an Israeli software development firm renowned primarily for its creation, Elementor, a WordPress website builder. This builder empowers WordPress users to design and modify websites using an intuitive and responsive drag-and-drop approach.
I understand Elementor is popular in a web design community, but there is no choice for 1-time payment. This is why I do not use Elementor often.
Divi (WordPress theme)
Divi goes beyond being merely a WordPress theme; it’s a comprehensive design framework that empowers you to craft and personalize every element of your website starting from scratch. With Divi, you have complete control over every aspect, right down to the most intricate details, enabling you to create perfect websites tailored to your needs and those of your clients.
I bought 1 permanent license on Black Friday a few years ago.
Avada (WordPress theme)
Avada Theme is the number one selling WordPress theme, complete with an intuitive website builder, dozens of ready-to-use design elements, and a number of pre-built website templates.
I don’t know the popularity, but I often get done website projects with Avada. I cannot say what theme is the best. I can say whatever you get used to it.
I feel that every year the discount rate is dropped. It was $39 before, but it’s $45 in 2023.
Cloud storage
We often hear about natural disasters like earthquakes, wildfires, floods, and hurricanes in the news almost every day. This makes me worry about losing my design files. I have important files for clients and my portfolio, even though they are made smaller for websites. I used to be against using cloud storage, but now I’m thinking about it. I used to believe it’s not a good idea because once you start using it, you have to keep paying for it forever. But now, I see that cloud storage can be useful just in case.
As you see below, the prices are quite equal.
Audible
Self-improvement is a critical aspect of a freelance web/graphic designer’s journey. It becomes evident that your design skills alone may not guarantee business success. As a freelance web/graphic designer, it’s essential to acquire proficiency in sales and marketing. Furthermore, you must also delve into the intricacies of the design business to thrive in this field.

Masterclass
Yanka Industries, Inc., operating under the trade name MasterClass, is an American online education subscription platform. This platform provides students with access to pre-recorded tutorials and lectures delivered by experts in a wide array of fields. The idea for MasterClass was conceived by David Rogier and brought to fruition through collaboration with Aaron Rasmussen.
I’ve been a subscriber to MasterClass since June. Up to now, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the photography and fashion design classes. However, I must admit that I haven’t felt like I’m learning as much as I’m simply enjoying the visual experience. I’m looking forward to the possibility of a MasterClass discount on Black Friday.

Learning is essential, even though it may not be as exciting as shopping. On Black Friday, I purchased two marketing courses with the goal of completing them within a week. While there are a lot of courses available, I specifically focused on the bestsellers and top-rated ones. The competition among course providers is quite intense. Teaching skills are precious, but creating popular courses is tough.
Mac Accessories
Many designers and creators spend a lot of time in front of their Macs, and they aim to maintain comfort while seeking inspiration and a touch of novelty. Personally, I’m interested in the products listed below, but whether I purchase them this year depends on their pricing.
Beats Studio Pro by Beats by Dle
I currently work at WeWork, and at times, the hot desk area can get quite noisy, especially when people are conducting Zoom meetings near my desk. To cope with this, I’ve been using artificial noise on YouTube, but I’m considering investing in wireless headphones. While I’m not particularly sensitive to sounds, I’m more concerned about the weight of the headphones and their battery life.
I am not sure how many hours I can keep using headphones without a headache.

It’s Black Friday weekend. I am enjoying the experience. Beats Studio Pro is priced from $479 to $299 on Amazon. At first sight, it was attractive, so I added it to the cart. Just to be sure, I checked a YouTube review. Marques Brownlee, a famous tech gadget YouTuber, reviewed it and mentioned that the ear touching the mesh was a minor issue. I checked other YouTube reviews, and he pointed out that the ear cover is not very deep. Although the price is great and the design is fine, fingerprints may easily stick to it. I decided to remove the item from the cart. While I would like to test good headphones, it’s not really a priority for me right now.
Microphone by RODE
Rode Microphones: RODE is a well-known Australian manufacturer of microphones and audio equipment. They are particularly recognized for their high-quality microphones used in various audio recording applications.
I am not a YouTuber or podcaster. We don’t actually know what people hear through a Zoom call. The MacBook Pro may not have many issues, but I would like to enhance it. Designers may like RODE.
Twelve South Curve Stand for MacBook
Posture undeniably plays a significant role in our overall health. Many office workers, including myself, experience issues like backaches, neck pain, and dry eyes due to prolonged laptop use. However, since we can’t do without our laptops, it’s crucial to find ways to work more ergonomically.
Investing in a laptop stand is a smart move to improve posture and overall comfort. I’ve noticed quite a few people at WeWork using them, and I’ve decided to follow suit. Even when I have the choice of selecting my workspace and desk, I believe having a laptop stand will make a positive difference. Plus, it’s something I can also use at home. I’m looking forward to experiencing the benefits it offers.

I was considering the Curve Flex by Twelve South. I checked the website, and the price was reduced from $79.99 to $64.99, which doesn’t seem like a great deal. Twelve South displays the price in US dollars. It is not a good user experience for Canadians. When I proceeded to checkout, I noticed they charge at least US$23 for shipping. While Twelve South provides free shipping in the US, Canadian residents are charged for shipping. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any Black Friday benefit for Canadian residents. I also checked Amazon, where it is priced at CA$109 with no discount, but I have roughly CA$60 in Amazon points. As a result, I am contemplating purchasing it on Amazon though I don’t have reason to rush.

Native Union for MacBook Pro
I bought an accessory bag on Amazon Point. I don’t agree with the regular price, but I may be able to find good deal on Black Friday.

So far, I’ve only taken advantage of the Native Union deal, purchasing 2 laptop cases for a MacBook Pro 14 inch and a laptop stand. They offer discounts of 30% off site-wide, which is relatively reasonable. Native Union initiated their Black Friday discounts exactly on Nov 23 and interestingly restricted access to regular consumers before 24 hours (on Thanksgiving Day). Only newsletter subscribers with a passcode could access the deals. Despite this unique experience, I managed to purchase what I needed.
iPhone Stand by Moft
I frequently watch YouTube on my iPhone, and I’ve realized that having an iPhone stand would greatly enhance my viewing experience. While the regular price of Moft stands may not be within my budget, I’m planning to keep an eye out for potential discounts or deals around Black Friday. This way, I hope to get a more affordable option to improve my iPhone setup for watching videos.

I checked the product before, but there is no discount for low-priced range products. Amazon Prime Members have a discount on Amazon, but unfortunately, I am not a member. I don’t agree with the price point for an iPhone stand, so I have not purchased it yet.

Wireless charger by Apple
You may have encountered issues with charging your iPhone. The Lightning connector is a relatively uncommon cable, and it can be frustrating to deal with. The iPhone 15 has transitioned to using USB-C, which makes one wonder about the advantages of the Lightning cable. Additionally, you might be contemplating what to do with this uncommon cable when you eventually upgrade to the iPhone 16 in the future.
Clothing
While I used to enjoy shopping in Tokyo, Japan, my interest in it has waned in recent times. Nowadays, I prefer wearing simple, unbranded clothing for as long as I can. My wardrobe isn’t very diverse, and although I still like to peruse fashion magazines, I no longer use fashion as a means of self-expression.
Allbirds
The Allbirds shoe boasts a distinctive lightweight feel due to its exclusive low-density foam sole, setting it apart from conventional sneakers. Additionally, the insoles are crafted from a proprietary merino wool fabric, delivering the trademark sensation of “walking on a cloud” that defines Allbirds footwear.
Health
As I age, I lose my excitement for acquiring many material possessions. Instead, I am inclined to invest in new experiences. Travel is one of them. I do this because I want to maintain a positive outlook every day. The daily news often brings us down, but it also serves as a reminder of our blessings. I strive to take care of myself both physically and mentally, and I find the benefit in music and art as well.

On Black Friday and during the holiday season, it’s important not to forget to purchase necessary products, with contact lenses being at the top of the list. Typically, contact lenses have no expiration date for a couple of years. It’s advisable to keep at least a three-month supply of contact lenses if it’s affordable during this time.
Ordinary
The Ordinary is an evolving collection of treatments offering familiar, effective clinical technologies positioned to raise pricing and communication integrity in skincare. The brand was created to celebrate integrity in its most humble and true form.
As a freelance and design subscription service provider, I must maintain good physical and mental health. Self-care is just as important as it is for a professional athlete. Ordinary is relatively affordable compared to female cosmetics.

Aesop (stylised as Aēsop) is an Australian luxury cosmetics brand that produces skincare, haircare and fragrance products headquartered in Collingwood, Victoria owned by French cosmetics company L’Oréal since August 30, 2023.
I used Aesop hand gel at the café, Bard & Beats, in Gastown. It was of good quality. I found the shop just one block away from the café. I have never purchased it, but if I could find a good deal on Black Friday, I would consider it.

I knew these services existed, but I didn’t know how to search for them. I typed, BetterHelp. Because I heard it on Andrew Yang’s YouTube. This is the value of ads. It showed online therapy in the title. Google also shows competitors. Business is tough.
